Gothenburg – a European frontrunner in battery and automotive competence

In our ongoing series introducing the regions behind the Automotive Skills Alliance (ASA), today’s spotlight shines on Gothenburg – Sweden’s innovation hub and a committed partner in shaping the future of automotive skills.

Gothenburg has become one of Europe’s key hubs for sustainable mobility and battery development. The city hosts major players like Volvo Cars, Volvo Group and Polestar, who are pushing hard into electrification and automation.

Two battery gigafactories are currently being built—one by Novo Energy (connected to Volvo Cars) and another by Volvo Group. These projects will create thousands of jobs and help Europe build its own battery supply chain.

The region benefits from Chalmers University and Battery Centre Gothenburg, which bring together R&D, education and testing facilities. Public and private sectors work closely here to make sure training programs match what companies actually need.

Programs like Voltage (focused on battery industry training) and the Teknikcollege partnership connect schools, companies and local government to prepare the workforce for these new industries.

With renewable energy, solid infrastructure and a collaborative approach, Gothenburg provides the right conditions for companies working on Europe’s green industrial transition.
