This article is part of our series introducing the regional partners of the Automotive Skills Alliance (ASA). Today, we’re spotlighting Castilla y León, a key contributor to Spain’s automotive industry and a dedicated supporter of the ASA’s mission.

Situated in northwest Spain, Castilla y León is a region that combines geographic advantages with a strong industrial base. Covering 94,226 km², it is one of the largest regions in Europe and benefits from a prime location for accessing both national and international markets.
The region’s proximity to Madrid, just 20 minutes away, and connections to other key Spanish industrial areas make it an important logistics and economic hub. Its role along the Lisbon-Paris-Helsinki axis further strengthens its position in European trade routes. Complementing this are Castilla y León’s educational institutions, which ensure a skilled workforce prepared to meet industry needs. With a population of nearly 2.5 million, the region offers a well-educated and highly skilled workforce supported by a stable social climate and innovative education infrastructure.
Automotive Industry: a cornerstone of Castilla y León
The automotive sector plays a significant role in Castilla y León’s economy, contributing 20% of the regional GDP and over 30% of its industrial turnover. The region is home to:
– Three major vehicle plants and one engine manufacturing plant, representing 15% of Spain’s vehicle production capacity
– More than 150 companies in the supply chain, supporting a robust network across various TIER levels
– 50% of regional exports linked to the automotive industry.
– Direct and indirect employment for around 100,000 people.
– More than 150 companies in the supply chain, supporting a robust network across various TIER levels.
Recent investments, exceeding €3 billion, have reinforced the region’s status as an important player in Spain’s automotive landscape. Projects such as the Renault Suppliers Parks in Valladolid and Palencia, as well as the electric hub in Valladolid, illustrate the government’s focus on creating a supportive environment for the sector.
A success story: FACYL Cluster for Automotive Excellence
The FACYL automotive cluster is an essential part of the region’s industrial ecosystem, bringing together manufacturers, suppliers, and knowledge centers. With 93 members, including three manufacturers and 84 suppliers, the cluster supports collaboration and innovation. In 2023, FACYL members reported a combined turnover of €9.2 billion and provided employment for nearly 30,000 workers.
Notably, Castilla y León was the first region in Spain to begin large-scale production of electric vehicles, supported by the “Regional Strategy of the Alternative Energies Vehicle” (VEACYL) and the “Energy Efficiency Strategy of Castilla y León.” These efforts align with broader EU energy efficiency and sustainability goals.
Contributions to ASA goals
As part of ASA, Castilla y León is committed to fostering skills and innovation in the automotive-mobility ecosystem. Through its industrial ecosystem and policies, the region supports Europe’s transition to connected and sustainable mobility while sharing valuable insights and strategies.
